Sleep Better This Week by Using a Bedtime Reminder

Did you know that it’s National Sleep Awareness Week?

Learning about sleep patterns can be quite interesting, so we polled a few staffers, and learned that going to the gym, watching YouTube videos, reading and preparing for the next day were a few reasons our team stays up late. Time seems to slip away from many people once the sun goes down. So, let’s talk about getting better sleep this week by using a simple bedtime reminder.

The goal here is to successfully get into bed at a decent hour. Let’s begin with a sleep calculator. The sleep calculator is a great tool because you don’t need to spend time or money searching for the next new sleep invention, you simply need to learn how much sleep you need each night. So, take 60 seconds and use a Sleep calculator to determine what time you need to go to bed in order to get the rest your body needs. Once you find out what time you need to go to bed, the next step is to set your iphone’s bedtime reminder. After it’s set, you will give your phone the responsibility of reminding you when to wrap up those distractions listed above, so you can get a good night’s rest.

How to set your bedtime alarm

Grab your iphone. Open the clock app and tap the bedtime tab at the bottom. Turn the bedtime reminder on by sliding the scale over to the right until it lights up green. You will take the amount of time you found using the sleep calculator, and set the moon icon accordingly. For example, if someone needs 8 hours of sleep, they will set their bedtime to 10pm. This will nudge you an hour before, at 9pm, to prepare you to wrap up your evening.

Customize the bedtime reminder

While you’re still in the clock app under the bedtime tab, select ‘Options’ in the top left-hand corner. Tap the days of the week you want to receive your reminders. Your reminder will alert you an hour before bed, and you can select do not disturb. When do not disturb is on during bedtime, the lock screen will remain dim, your calls and alerts will be silenced and notifications will be sent to your history. You can rest easy knowing that you will always receive emergency alerts. Because many people are distracted by texts, calls and notifications, it may be wise to enable this feature if you want to improve your sleep schedule. You can customize your wake up sound, and adjust how loud you want that beautiful noise to guide you out of bed in the morning.

The challenge remains

Here’s the real challenge; responding to your bedtime reminder by managing your time. Maybe allow yourself one more 30 minute show, or 30 more minutes to finish (insert all the things here) up. Will there be days when you ignore your reminder? Sure. Will there be longer mornings because of it? Yes. That is called a natural consequence! However, taking the time to use the sleep calculator and implementing that number into your bedtime reminder can be the beginning of more rest. As a wise, gifted and beautiful human you are now in charge of your own sleep destiny. Test out the bedtime reminder and let us know how it’s working.

Rest well with your new sleep schedule, and have fun conquering the world friends!
