October is National Physical Therapy Month! Here at Performance Physical Therapy, we thought the best way to celebrate was to raise awareness of the many benefits of going to physical therapy.
First off, what is physical therapy (PT) exactly? How does it help you? PT is the treatment of disease, pain, or injury through exercise, massage, and heat/cold regimens. Starting and continuing PT can help you recover from injuries, improve your range of motion, and manage pain. It is also a safe alternative to opioids and other drugs. You don’t need to wait until you are in pain to start PT either. PT also acts as preventative care and can help you age healthfully, stay active longer, maintain strength, and cut down on the severity of injuries.
Dr. Mark McCoy, our founder and one of our physical therapists here at Performance Physical Therapy explains that physical therapists, “will develop an individualized plan to reach your goals. Treating pain by exclusively taking pain medication with not bring long-term life-changing results. However, working with a physical therapist who develops a plan for real pain reduction through movement is a long-term treatment.”
So how can you celebrate National Physical Therapy Month? Make an appointment with your physical therapist, continue your exercises, and follow the plan your therapist makes for you. Tell your friends, loved ones, acquaintances, and even enemies about taking the step to start Physical Therapy. Help your body feel the best it can!
