How To Survive Cold and Flu Season

Autumn is here which means cooler weather outside, the holidays are approaching, and pumpkin flavored everything! Unfortunately, it also marks the beginning of cold and flu season. 🙁

We want you to be able to enjoy all the fun things this beautiful Fall season has to offer, so here are some tips on how you can avoid those germs and stay healthy!


  1. Wash Your Hands!

We know you’ve heard it before, but we’re here to remind you again because of the importance- Washing your hands frequently is essential for staying healthy! Viruses are passed by direct contact with people and contaminated surfaces. They can survive for hours. So the more you wash, the less likely you are to get sick.

Just rubbing your hands together with some soap and warm water for about 20 seconds will kill the germs. Alcohol-based sanitizers are also a great substitution if a sink is unavailable.

  1. More Movement!

Staying in good physical shape will also help you feel your best. Studies show that exercise can help boost your body’s ability to fight off infection. Moderate amounts of aerobic exercise such as jogging, walking and cycling during the cold and flu season boost the body’s defenses against viruses and bacteria. But if you are already sick, don’t overdo it! A long vigorous workout can produce too much physical stress which undermines the immune system.

It may not seem like much, but just adding more walking in throughout the day can make a huge difference. Any movement is better than none!

  1. Stay Home!

We know it can be difficult to take time off from work, but if you are not feeling good, stay home! It is necessary to give yourself time to rest so you can recover faster and return to work feeling 100%. The most common mistake people make is to not taking care of themselves when they are sick. If you overdue it when you’re not feeling well, you will just make your sickness worse and it will take longer for you to get healthy.

Also, your coworkers will be grateful as well. No one like to see someone in the office coughing and sneezing. Instead of infecting everyone around you, do yourself and others a favor by taking a sick day to rest.

  1. Drink plenty of fluids!

Fluids help to thin out the mucus that your body makes when you’re sick, as well as flush out the toxins that are invading your body. Staying hydrated is a key in avoiding sickness.

Make sure to drink plenty of water! Orange juice, which is high in Vitamin C, and hot liquids such as tea are a good choice as well. Try to avoid drinking too much coffee or alcohol- they can dehydrate you.

  1. Sleep!

A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that subjects who slept for fewer than seven hours were nearly three times as susceptible to colds as people who slept for at least eight hours. So make sure to get that 8 hours of sleep so you can feel healthy and productive the next day!

  1. Zinc!

When the first sign of symptoms arrive, think about taking some Zinc tablets. Zinc is a mineral essential to the cells of the immune system, and a study found that taking it within 24 hours of the onset of cold symptoms reduces the duration of the illness. It is very helpful in battling viral infections.
