Headaches: Knowing your triggers and when to seek help

Physical therapy is more than rehabbing an injury, and for some people a simple visit can change the quality of their life. Dr. Warren Brandle in Gold River referred Marie to our Folsom office over a year ago, and we had the pleasure of talking with her about how physical therapy assisted in the relief of her migraine headaches.

Performance PT: How did you end up at our office?

Marie: Dr. Brandle. This is a problem I’ve had for years. Dr. Brandle noticed the inflammation of my neck to my shoulder. Because my neck gets so stiff, it triggers migraine headaches. My migraine headaches were always really, really common to the point where I began to think something was wrong with my brain. Dr. Brandle told me, I could do physical therapy or take pain medication.

I was all for physical therapy. I think PT is a great thing, it sure beats drugs. I would much rather do PT than drugs, and I was willing to do whatever I needed to do to find relief. Physical therapy was the right option for me.

Performance PT: How did Mark help you?

Marie: Well, I don’t have headaches! I’ve had migraines since I was a teenager. My mother had them too. I know all of my triggers including this neck muscle! Other triggers include sugar, anything sweet, not sleeping enough, skipping meals and perfumes. Those are the main ones.  The only ones I cannot control are the barometric  pressure or my neck pain. That’s when I call Mark! A year ago, I was waking up with a headache every day. My sister reminded me of my neck causing my headaches. If I don’t have that pain, I can move my neck a lot better, I don’t have the headaches and life is good.

Performance PT: Any advice for others?

Marie: Do physical therapy before you live with pain or you’re offered pain medication. You feel so much better. I’m really sensitive to drugs even just Motrin or aspirin. Drugs make my head foggy and my body doesn’t feel right.

Do physical therapy!

Performance PT: What did you enjoy most about our office?

Marie: I chose to go to the Folsom office. I enjoyed the setup, the cleanliness and the openness, the aquatic therapy option, the private rooms and the ultrasound machines are all great. This is the place I’ve been impressed by most! Friendly staff, knowledgeable and eager to work with you. Most of the staff are learning to become physical therapists and after all of their training, they’ll be experts like Mark is in the physical workings of the body and know what it takes to get you well!

Performance PT: Marie, thank you for sharing your story with us! We’re thrilled Dr. Brandle had the answer for your reoccurring neck issue and referred you to Performance Physical Therapy!
